Project 365:
Good-bye March blog background. It was fun while it lasted.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Grateful for my blankies. They smell good and help me sleep.
Valu: Grateful for toilets. Did you know that Greece had indoor plumbing 1000 years ago?
Mom: Grateful for my darlings boys, all 3. They keep me laughing.
Dad: Grateful for scriptures. They keep me centered.

Monday, March 30

Project 365:
Te'a has not left my side all day. I think she wants to be close just in case we decide to leave again. She is our little bundle of sunshine. I believe she leaves a little bit of joy behind in every bouncy step she takes.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Grateful to be able to play with my toys today, I missed them.
Valu: Grateful that I am current with my homework. I really don't like to get behind.
Mom: Grateful that I have such easy going, content kiddos. They really don't need much (as in: stuff) to be happy.
Dad: Grateful that I can rely on my family for support. So grateful.

Sunday, March 29

Project 365:
Good-bye Maui. Thank-you for sharing your beauty with us and helping us to relax in your  soul-centering breezes. We will come back and visit soon.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Planes are so fun.
Valu:  As much as I love vacations it always feels good to be back home.
Mom: So grateful for our darling neighbor who stayed with Te'a in the back house. We had Te'a all set to go to a kennel but she was so anxious about the whole ordeal that she nibbled her poor little leg and left 2 open wounds. I couldn't ignore the obvious stress this was causing her and asked our neighbor to fill in last minute (within 3 hrs of leaving). It was obvious that T'ea was well taken care of, thanks to our fabulous neighbor friend. :)
Dad: Grateful to be home, there is no place like home.

Project 365:

Today, we acted like tourists and took a whale watching tour. I didn't capture much of our adventure on film. I wanted to be fully present and enjoy all the splendor of the show, not just see it from the viewfinder of my camera, which is often the case. The tour was magical.

While the whales were most certainly amazing, the most exciting event occurred when our boat rescued these 2 local boys who were out fishing. Their kayak capsized. The high winds kept over-turning them. The big excitement came when the coast guard showed up. They had a helicopter swoop down and circle us, followed by a big rig and jet skiers. Poor guys were so embarrassed about the ruckus they caused.

A cool wood carving near the dock.

After the whale adventure we drove up to the top of Haleakala. According to their literature, this is the only place in the world you can drive on a paved road from sea level to an elevation of 10,000 feet in less than 38 miles. It was beautiful. Driving thru the clouds was magical. When we got to the top it was really cold. You can tell by the Keys faces how they feel about the cold. :)

Definitely worth the trip. It took us a little over an hour to make it to the top. We drove sloooowly because one of the Keys is a bit nervous on windy roads with steep drop-offs.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for cars with tops (we rented a convertible)...when it's cold.
Valu:  Grateful that we went to the top of the Haleakala. It felt like we were on top of the world.
Mom:  Grateful for today's fun adventures. Being out in nature is always heavenly but being out in unfamiliar areas allows me to see Nature's splendor with fresh eyes. She is awe inspiring.
Dad:  Grateful for the beautiful show that the whales put on for us.

Friday, March 27

Project 365:
I seriously had the best sleep of my life in this bed. I woke up at 4 am feeling like I had 10 hrs. of sleep instead of just 5. Marriott really knows how to make a bed. Yes, I checked the tags. The beds are custom made  for their hotels.
After a fabulous night of sleep, I pull back the curtains, step out on the lanai and encounter this view. deep sigh...Looks like it's going to be a wonderful vacation.

We spent they day playing in Marriott's pools. The boys had a good time playing in the waterfalls and sliding down the water slides.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Swimming in the pool is my very favorite.
Valu:  Grateful for a wonderful relaxing day.
Mom:  Grateful for a beautiful day full of fun and relaxation.
Dad:  Grateful for good food and lots of sleep.

Thursday, March 26

Project 365:
This is Keenan's first plane ride.  Well, the first he could remember. -- Such a different scenario from his 'real' first plane trip 2 1/2 years ago when he screamed for over 3 hrs both ways to the mainland.  So relieved that this trip went over so well.  We will just forget about the airplane trip 2 years ago and call this trip THE FIRST...after all,  he doesn't remember it, so why should we.
How beautiful is he? I will never tire of Keenan's sense of wonder.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Plane rides are the best. Can we go again.
Valu:  Grateful that I was able to go to camp and so grateful to come home and take a shower. I am also grateful to be here in Maui.
Mom:  Grateful that Maui is only a 25 min flight. A perfect testing ground for Keenan's tolerance.
Dad:  Grateful that we finally took a family vacation together...2 1/2 years is too long of a time.

Wednesday, March 25

Project 365:
I received a box full of fun goodies in the mail today. Big Picture Scrapbooking really knows how to say thank-you. I have taken several of their classes and have learned so much from their fabulous teachers. I love the convenience of taking online classes, such a great concept.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I love scouting, like Valu....can I go and be with him?
Valu: (....still at camp.)
Mom:  Grateful for a day full of sunshine...it will make Valu's camp that much more pleasant.
Dad:  Grateful for the quiet and peace that is here in our home tonight.

Tuesday, March 24

Project 365:

I really wish I had a picture of the scene that I am about to describe.  --  Today I dropped Valu off at his first scout overnighter--a 3day/2night camp. He was excited and feeling a bit green. As I was getting ready to drive away, the scouts started to set up camp and their easy tents. -- I took a quick scan thinking I would find my son being a helpful, team player in the set up....um..where is he? Oh, there he is...over in a corner trying out his new fire starter. Sparks were falling on the dried brush beneath him creating a bit of smoke by his shoe.

WTG son, almost starting a fire within minutes of arriving.....a proud moment indeed. :)

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I love my brother and want him to come home and sleep with me. (they share a room--not a bed.)
Valu:
Mom: Grateful for Valu's scout leaders. They sacrifice precious vacation and family time to help these boys. So grateful.
Dad: Grateful to see our Valu-boy growing. Is he really old enough to go on camp-outs without his old man? Yes, yes! I guess he is.

Monday, March 23

Project 365:
This is what my photo wall actually looks like with an explosion of springtime butterflies.

This is what I have envisioned for this wall.
I want to put this quote up with vinyl lettering (I added the words using photoshop). Grandma Page wrote to me every week while I was on my mission. She would close her letters with a quote, or as I would call it a "Grandmaism". This particular quote was my favorite. I always thought it was hers--until I did a little research years later. So what, if the quote was from the poet Thoreau. To me---it will always represent my beloved Grandma Page. I want to get this up on my wall to honor her. I miss her--and want to have a place where I can relish the positive influence she has had in my life. I want my boys to know how much I love her. She will never be forgotten.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Playing with my brother.
Valu: Grateful that we were rockin' out to Guitar Hero for FHE.
Mom: Grateful my boys. They keep me laughing.
Dad: Grateful that I didn't pursue my dream to be in a band...I have a hard time just keeping a beat.

Sunday, March 22

Project 365:
I noticed that things were a little too quiet. After a little bit of searching through the too quiet house...I found Keenan in the corner of my office playing with his brother's itouch. Sneaky kiddo.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I enjoyed watching a video with my brother.
Valu:  I am grateful that we were able to go to church today. It felt like we haven't been there in a long time due to stake conference and being sick last week.
Mom: Grateful for my darling little primary class. Their precocious innocence is endearing.
Dad: Grateful that I was able to take a much needed nap today....3 hours of sweetness.

Saturday, March 21

Background Music: "Arabesque 1" by Debussy -- Brooke learned to play this song on the piano while she was here. She is an amazing pianist and we miss her beautiful playing. I will always think of her when I hear this song.

Project 365:
I like to wave to our visitors as they leave our home...I think it gives me a sense of closure. My heart always aches a bit as we say goodbye...especially with this family. How can I quantify the amount of love I (we) have for them? I love the feminine energy they bring into our home. I adore the constant chatter. I love that when the girls get up from the couch they do it with a ballerina leap. I love that they can get dirty too and play a rambunctious game of light sabers or play in the sand. I love that these girls have such an amazing sense of self. I love their giggles and their stories. I just love being around them. All of them. Thank-you for sharing your selves with us. We will always adore you.  Dave, we adore you too. :)

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  I miss my cousins...they are my favorite.
Valu:  Grateful that the Nally's came to visit...it has been a quiet day without them.
Mom: How can a house go from feeling so full to feeling so empty...So grateful that we had a week with the Nally family. It was simply glorious.
Dad: Grateful for being able to take a nap today. Naps are wonderful. Wonderful!

Friday, March 20

Project 365:
Enjoyed a lovely dinner at Turtle Bay overlooking the ocean with 2 of our favorite people.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I love playing games with my cousins.
Valu: Grateful that Spring Break starts today...no school until Mar 30. Yippee!
Mom: So grateful that Steph and the girls watched the boys so that the adults could enjoy a child free evening. Thanks girlies.
Dad: Grateful to hang with Kim and Dave. Two of the most genuine people I know.

Thursday, March 19

Project 365:

Nothing like a delicious BBQ and a water balloon fight to conclude a beautiful day of fun.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: Water balloon fights are my favorite.
Valu: Grateful that I got a day off of school. (There was a wreck in Kaaawa this morning and 2 telephone poles went down. The road was closed down until after 10am. If we traveled around the other side of the island--it would have taken over 2 hrs due to early morning traffic. It was a perfect day to play parent approved hooky and hang with the cousins.)
Mom: Just trying to soak up all things Nally. I love having them here.
Dad: We need to have more water balloon fights...so fun.

Wednesday, March 18

Project 365:

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I love my COUSINS!
Valu: Seriously, it is so fun to hang with the cousins.
Mom: Grateful to cook for such gracious recipients. The Nally's are good for my ego. :)
Dad: Hey...I love your cooking. Always grateful when you cook curry. Always.

We spent this beautiful sunny day at Waimea Bay.  We also ate the world's best sandwiches at Waialua Bakery then topped off our meal with Matsumoto's  shave ice. A perfect touristy day.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Playing at the beach with my cousins.
Valu:  Grateful for a school holiday and the fun we had on the North Shore today.
Mom:  So fun to do touristy things!
Dad:  So fun to come home and hear about all the fun. Grateful everyone is having a good time.

Sunday, March 15

Project 365:
A Batchelor Family Tradition....playing games.
There is an unwritten rule that when a Batchelor or any of their descendants get together, they must sit down and play games, especially on Sundays. :)   I hope this tradition will last throughout many generations.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  I really love my cousins. They are my favorite.
Valu:  Grateful that I have cousins that I can reconnect with so easily.
Mom:  So grateful to have my sister here.--I always forget how much I miss her until we are reunited again.
Dad:  Grateful to hear my walls shake with laughter...girlie laughter is so refreshing.

Saturday, March 14

Project 365:
This is what happens when the Nally family comes to visit--Lots of fun and laughter (or cackeling). So happy they decided to spend their spring break with us!

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: My cousins are here...Yeah!!
Valu:  Grateful that the cousins are here.
Mom:  Grateful for Nally visits. I love this family of girlies. LOVE!
Dad:  I love to see how happy my wife is when Kim and her family visits. They are some of my favorite people too.

Friday, March 13

Project 365:
Our gas prices have been oscillating around these same numbers since January. They make me very happy. When I was at the pump last year between June and mid August, I would break out into a forehead sweat. The gas was around $4.50 a gallon. Gulp!!

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for my mom.
Valu:  Grateful that today is Friday...no school til Tuesday.
Mom:  Grateful for a wonderful evening with Ki. So nice to be able to have a "we" night.
Dad:  Grateful that my wife loves me.

Thursday, March 12

Project 365:
Valu wanted to make sure that I mentioned that he was coerced into doing this recitation. He is not very happy, to say the least. He is especially bothered by the fact that he is in his P.J's...but the kid loves to make his mom happy. Thanks Valu!!!

Without further ado, I present Valu reciting the first 100 and 1 digits of Pi.

Just in case you'd like to follow along:
3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510 58209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679

Did you know that March 14 is National Pi Day? Valu's math class is celebrating by having a Pi contest. The person who memorizes the most digits gets the first slice of pie at their Pi party. Cool math teacher, eh? Valu says he has probably spent a total of 1 hr over the last couple of days, memorizing. Seriously, I don't know how he does it. He didn't get this gene from his parents. Ki and I have a hard time remembering 7 digit phone numbers. It's a Valu thing. His brilliant mind keeps us in a state of awe.

By the way, there is a girl in his class who is trying to memorize 80 digits--she thinks she is going to win.

edited: Due to lack of time, Valu's math teacher had the students write down their digits of pi instead of recite---Valu missed #65. The girl who memorized 80 digits won-she  memorized her digits by writing them down on paper. Valu uses verbal repetition as his memorization arsenal.
Valu, we think you are amazing. We also think it is good that you lose competitions every once in awhile. Keeps you humble and encourages you to keep striving. :)

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for my friends.
Valu:  Grateful for fun activities at school.
Mom:  Grateful that Valu is a self-motivated learner.
Dad:  Grateful for my wife--we are a great team.

Mom:  Grateful that Valu's school is able to stretch his inquiring mind.
Dad:  Grateful for the opportunity to serve others.

Tuesday, March 10

Project 365:

Here is Keenan saying my favorite word: balloon. I crack up every time he says it.  I love his little accent and wanted to capture it before it is gone.
Um...yes...he did attack me and my camera at the end. An attack hug! I should have seen it coming when I saw that little smirk of a smile appear on his face. Ah...the reality of living in a house with all boys. I adore my life with these wonderful little men who have a bit of wildness in them. I wouldn't change a thing.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for my friend Juan. We had fun riding bikes today.
Valu:  Grateful for the Internet and that I don't have to go to the library for all the research I need to do.
Mom:  Grateful for my simple happy life. So grateful.
Dad:  Grateful for the Internet also. When my service went down yesterday, I realized how very dependent I am upon its many uses.

Monday, March 9

Project 365:
Today's immense rainfall produced the most amazing waterfalls. (Blast my low resolution camera phone...BLAST). We drove up thru Ahuimanu to get closer to their majesticness.
Yes, those are beautiful peacocks walking the streets of this quaint little Ahuimanu neighborhood. The perfect touch to a breathtaking road trip.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan: I am grateful for Valu. I love him.
Valu:  Grateful for water balloon fights.
Mom:  Grateful for BBQ dinners and nights filled with fun.
Dad:  Grateful for my haircut. Thank you, lover.

Project 365:
One of my favorite quotes is "A mother of boys works from son up to son down". Author Unknown.
Today it rained all day and we spent the day indoors. Not an easy feat for 2 active boys. Sooo.. at the end of the day as I went to turn out the lights, I turned and saw this scene. My heart about burst with profound love for these 2 little guys. I had to grab my camera and capture them. Two little boys all nestled snug in their beds...pure bliss.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Eating candy is THE BEST. Daddy comes home tomorrow with more candy. YIPPEE!
Valu:  Love the sound of rain coming down.
Mom:  Grateful for rainy, lazy Saturdays. Sometimes it feels so great to just hang out and do absolutely nothing remarkable.
Dad:

Friday, March 6

Project 365:
We finally purchased Valu's scout uniform paraphernalia. He will attend his first official Day Camp next weekend.
I am a bit flabbergasted at the cost of these essentials. Seriously! Later this month he will be going on his first camp-out....we need to buy all the camping supplies too. Wonder what kind of damage that will incur?  I hope that Valu will enjoy scouting. I don't think our family could be described as outdoorsey. Our rendition of  "roughing it" is staying in a bad hotel. Sad, but true. Hopefully, Valu will change our bad-natured mantra and become an avid outdoorsman.  One can only hope.  I just hope I don't ever have to go out on such an excursion. I really love nature. I do! I love hiking and exploring and just breathing in all the freshness.  BUT, and it is a big BUT, after a wonderful day of exploring, I really like to sleep in a comfy bed surrounded by four walls with blessed indoor plumbing nearby. I admit that I am a bit of a pampered princess. But, I married a prince who gets bruises from the uncomfortable 'pea' even more than I do.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for chocolate covered raisins. YUM!
Valu:  Grateful for weekends.
Mom:  Grateful for relaxing, unscheduled weekends, too. Pure bliss.
Dad:

Thursday, March 5

Project 365:
Tonight I read these 4 books to Keenan before he went to bed. We had to re-read the monster book 3 times...because it is just soooo funny! I adore this night time ritual of reading books. I love snuggling with a freshly bathed boy who smells of  lavender scented shampoo. I love how he'll snuggle right into me...he wiggles and wiggles until he gets in just the right spot. I love to watch the wonder and anticipation in his eyes. And oh...gazing at those beautiful eyelashes and flawless skin. sigh. I treasure these moments because I know they are fleeting. It seems like I was reading to Valu like this,  just the other day....but now he is a tweenie....and thinks he's too old to snuggle. How did this happen? Valu, you can never be too old to snuggle with your mother. Never.  :)

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  I am grateful for chocolate. I love chocolate.
Valu:  I am so grateful to be taking piano lessons. I love playing the piano.
Mom:  I am grateful that Valu is grateful to be taking piano lessons.
Dad: (via a cell phone conversation @ 11:50 pm Hawaii Time, in a taxi, on the way to his hotel from the Sydney Airport. ) -- I am so grateful to be on land. That 10.5 hour flight felt more like a 24 hour flight. And, lucky me, I get to wake up in 5 hours to catch my plane to NZ....this flight is only 3 hrs.

Yes...Kivalu is on a whirlwind trip to New Zealand for Mother Fifita's 79th birthday. He will be back Sunday morning.

Wednesday, March 4

Project 365:
Te'a Queen of Dogs. This is Te'a's full legal name.  At 6 yrs. old, Valu decided that this would be the perfect name for his first official pet.
The name fits her perfectly. She is queenly.
She is our little bundle of joy. She fill our lives with sunshine.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  I love my school friends.
Valu:  Grateful for automobiles. Today I was really just appreciating the fact that we can quickly go to where we need to be thanks to cars.
Mom:  Grateful for the quiet that settles over our house when the boys are tucked into bed.
Dad:  Grateful for reliable employees who don't have to be micro-managed.

Tuesday, March 3

Project 365:
Kumon has been a part of Valu's daily life for 6 years. I am amazed at the level of comprehension and mastery that he has achieved in both reading and math. It may not be his favorite thing to do, but when we gave him the option to quit last month, his answer was an unequivocal,  NO.     Whew!!
12 months ago Valu earned an award that not many Kumon students achieve: Level G by Grade 5. Which basically means he was learning algebra in 5th grade. He is the first student to earn this award from the Kahuku Kumon Center. Mrs. Graham keeps this poster of Valu hanging from her ceiling --she told me she has received numerous inquires about Kumon due to this darling poster. Valu, our darling, little poster child. :)

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Grateful for the rain--except when I can't go out and play.
Valu:  Grateful for study-hall at school. I love not having homework.
Mom:  Grateful for the surf report application on my iphone. I love knowing the tide forecast, swell levels, the exact temperature, the humidity levels and the wind direction and speed. I especially love knowing the exact minute that the sun will rise and fall, and the exact time that the low/high tide will take place during the day. I didn't know I was such a weather geek. Thanks to Pops, the weather channel was always on at 949 E. 9th St. I guess the weather bug bit me too.
Dad:  Nothing is better than coming home after a long day at work. So grateful to be here.

Monday, March 2

Project 365:
Valu's Christmas gift finally came. His Kindle has been on back order since December. A pretty cool gadget for those who love to read. My favorite feature--it has a built in dictionary. When you come across a word you don't know, you just put the cursor in front of the word and --Voil'a--up pops the definition. A very good thing for Valu's curious mind.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  I liked making pinwheels for FHE.
Valu:  Grateful for a homework free evening.
Mom:  Grateful for innovative technology. I am especially grateful for the fact that I will no longer be Valu's dictionary.  It was too much pressure.
Dad:  Grateful that 24 is on tonight. I love to watch Jack Bauer save hundreds if not thousands of lives.

Sunday, March 1

Project 365:

Tonight we christened Ki's new toy;  a professional grade Belgian waffle maker. Babe, you are right. Belgian waffles are WAY more tasty than plain 'ol regular waffles.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Being with my daddy at church.
Valu:  I love eating breakfast for dinner.
Mom:  Grateful that Ki cooked dinner. Delish.
Dad:  Sometimes the simple meals are the most satisfying.

Saturday, February, 28

* Background music: "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack.
This will be the last day that I will include a theme song with my daily post. I have throughly enjoyed the process---but I will be turning the playlist off. Babe, if you want to listen to the songs dedicated to you, just scroll down and click on the play button. :)

Project 365:
We finally went to see SlumDog Millionaire . Wow!!!  It was Raw. Beautiful. Love that we finally get to see a film out of India without all the frivolity of Bollywood. --- I am happy that it received 8 Academy Awards.

Gratitude Journal:
Keenan:  Playing with my daddy.
Valu:  Eating and hanging out with Dad.
Mom:  Enjoyed an evening out with Ki. It was actually cold tonight-65 degrees. We had to stop at Starbucks and order some hot chocolate for the long, cold drive home.
Dad:  Being with my family is the best.
